Hormones carry vital information to every cell in your body. All of these hormones carry different functions and tell your body how to operate. For example, melatonin increases at night to help you sleep, and rising cortisol levels help you wake up in the morning. With hormones tied so intricately to energy and metabolism, it should come as no surprise that hormone imbalance and hormonal changes can wreak havoc on our energy levels. All of us deal with warning levels of hormones as we age, making it important to understand how this may impact your sense of vitality over time.

Your metabolism is heavily involved with your hormones, which affects your energy levels. Many hormones are involved in complex interactions, making it difficult to pinpoint which hormones are responsible for these changes. As one hormone specialist notes, diagnosing hormonal imbalances requires practitioners to act as “medical detectives.” That’s where the professionals at MITA Functional Medicine come in. We’re here to help you understand these hormonal imbalances and find the right supplement to help you feel like yourself again.

A few hormones that we “investigate” are:

Thyroid hormones: The hormones of the thyroid gland are responsible for maintaining balance in the body, affecting temperature, metabolism, heart rate, mood, and energy levels. Low levels of thyroid hormones (hypothyroidism) can cause many body systems to slow down which typically lead to fatigue and low energy. Less energy consumed can lead to weight gain, slower digestion to constipation, and decreasing serotonin levels often results in depression.

Adrenal hormones: The adrenal glands produce cortisol. Cortisol responds to the body’s energy needs by regulating metabolism and hunger. Did you know that chronic stress can disrupt this system and damage your body’s ability to function optimally.

Testosterone: Although testosterone is the primary male sex hormone, its functions are essential in both men and women. Decreased testosterone levels may result in low sex drive, loss of muscle mass, mood disturbances, and even low energy levels.

Estrogen and progesterone: When estrogen and progesterone levels fluctuate or drop sharply, many women experience uncomfortable symptoms, including hot flashes, mood swings, and bone thinning. Both low and high estrogen levels may also affect your energy levels.

Women’s hormone levels can shift dramatically during perimenopause and menopause, whereas men typically experience a slow gradual decline in hormones beginning around age 30. As middle age approaches, both men and women can develop troubling symptoms and often see their energy levels decline.

At MITA, we treat hormone imbalances with bio-identical hormones. Our mainstay for testosterone therapy is high-quality bio-identical testosterone pellets that contain no fillers. If you’ve been feeling a decrease in energy and liveliness, schedule an appointment at MITA Functional Medicine today!
